How did We Get Here?
Nyima Murry was invited to collaborate with the National Trust’s team at Kedleston Hall and their Tibetan community partners to create a new piece of artwork that responds to the themes raised in ‘How Did We Get Here.’
Working with her close collaborator, Jim Stephenson, Nyima produced and directed two films for this major exhibition – a short documentary that introduces the show’s themes and process of community-informed conservation, and a major installation film entitled ‘Encounters.’
Encounters’, follows the stories of three selected objects from Kedleston Hall’s Museum collection. Explored from the perspective of invited members of the Tibetan Community in Britain ‘encountering’ these objects, the film navigates the artefacts’ providence and cultural and spiritual significance with the entangled stories of Tibetans in Britain today. Surfacing memories associated with these objects, the film traces the journey of displacement of both these objects and this diasporic community, unpicking the relationship between Britain’s Imperial history in India and historic intervention in Tibet.
